about

This is a rare acoustic set, one of the only ones we ever played, at a tiny theatre in downtown Asheville (it was on Wall Street) called Area: 45 on March 26th 2003. It was an early show of ours, maybe our 5th or 6th.

We invited local legend Cary Fridley (of Devilish Mary at the time) to duet with me on three Carter Family songs, which was a great honor and one of the highlights of my musical journey. Our great friend Vickie Burick (of Nevada at the time) sang with me on Sarah's Lament like she does on The Lonesome Sea studio version. Thanks, Vickie and Cary!

Like a lot of our shows, this setlist was never even close to being repeated, including a rare early version of "All Roads Lead to Helen," which would appear on our second album six years later. It was recorded with a stereo mic plugged into a mini disc player (a video of the whole show exists too), and there was no p.a. system. I sang through an amp, which gives it a weird sound.

This was a very important show for us at the time; it felt really good.

We hope you enjoy it! It's free! Cheers, Wayne
